Cleaning and Disinfecting for the Holidays

The Holidays are approaching and a lot of us are desperately craving to enjoy this Holiday with our loved ones. During this time cleaning and properly disinfecting your home is more important than ever. Properly cleaning and disinfecting your home requires more than simply spraying a cleaner or disinfectant on a surface. You want to make sure your methods kill germs or viruses in high-touch areas.

Cleaning Vs. Disinfecting

First, you  must understand the difference between cleaning and disinfecting.

Clean: To clean a surface is to remove dirt or grime build-up.

Disinfect: To disinfect a surface is to rid the surface of bacteria or viruses that may live on that surface.

Holiday Cleaning and Disinfecting with EPA approved Products:

When beginning the process of cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, you must first choose a cleaner that will do the job right. Unfortunately, not all cleaners are equally the same. One website to reference for disinfectant and cleaners is the EPA website. You should check the product for the EPA label and enter the registration code.

Time to Disinfect:

Now that you have an EPA approved product, it is now time to disinfect surfaces in your home. Most consumers improperly use disinfectant products. In order to make sure the cleaner kills potential viruses, you must use the product correctly. Spraying and wiping the surface immediately is incorrect, because it does not allow enough time for the disinfectant to kill the virus. The label on the disinfectant should have instructions on the allotted amount of “setting time” for the product to be effective. After reading the instructions, wear gloves and begin the procedure. After the disinfectant solution has set for the proper amount of time, use a microfiber cloth and wipe the surface clean.

Where to Disinfect:

High-touch areas should be disinfected and cleaned.

Here are a few high-touch areas to disinfect:

  • Light switches
  • Door Knobs
  • Countertops
  • Chairs
  • Toilets
  • Remote Control Devices or Game Controls
  • Rails
  • Cabinet Handles
  • Sinks
